- Group dining where someone runs split-the-bill negotiations
- Bills with significant tax (NYC restaurants, Chicago bars)
- Tipping on subtotal vs post-tax (the gap matters when tax >7%)
- Quick rounding for cash splits
Common workflows

Cash-only restaurant. Toggle round-up; you each pay $44, the extra goes to tip.
Tip on subtotal only. Toggle subtotal-only; tip 18% of pre-tax bill, total includes pre-tax + tax + tip.
Hotel concierge. Service tip ($5-20 typically); the calculator handles flat-amount mode.
Frequently asked questions
Tip on subtotal or post-tax?
Etiquette varies by region. Subtotal is more common in Europe; many US diners tip on the post-tax total. The difference matters at higher tax rates (NYC, Chicago).
How much should I tip?
Region-dependent. US: 15-20% restaurant, 10-15% delivery. EU: rounding up is common, formal tipping is rarer. Japan/ Korea: tipping is unusual.
What about a service charge?
If the bill includes a service charge, additional tip is generally not expected (unless service was exceptional).
Round per person?
Toggle. Round per-person amounts up to the nearest dollar for cash splits. The difference rounds into the tip.
Tip on bottle service?
Often added as 18-20% gratuity automatically — verify the bill before tipping again.
Group split with different orders?
This tool splits evenly. For itemized splits, use a dedicated bill-split app like Splitwise.
How much should I tip a hairdresser, nail salon, tattoo artist, or mover?
US norms: hairdresser / nail salon 15–20%, tattoo artist 15–20% (some tip more for large pieces), food delivery (Uber Eats/DoorDash) 10–20% or a $3–5 minimum, movers roughly $20–40 per mover per day (or 5–10% of the total split among the crew), dog groomer 15–20%. Enter the bill and percentage above for the exact amount.
How do I calculate a tip on my iPhone, or build one in Python?
On iPhone, the Calculator app has no tip button — multiply the bill by
1.20 for a 20% total, or use this page. In Python, a tip calculator is one line: total = bill * (1 + tip_pct/100); per_person = total / party.Related tools
